Senate bill s 2920 is a bill sponsored by Senators Lautenberg and Udall requiring all states to mandate ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers. Peer reviewed scientific studies have proven that requiring ignition interlocks for all convicted DWI offenders will save lives by significantly decreasing the likelihood of repeat drunk driving offenses.
Drivers who have previous drunk driving convictions make up approximately one-third of the drunk driving problem in America. On Average, these offenders have driven drunk 87 times before they are caught and convicted. An interlock device allows a drunk driver to drive to work or school and provide for his or her family. The only
thing a convicted drunk driver can’t do with an interlock is drive drunk.
Requiring these drivers to have an interlock device on their car after their license is reinstated would help keep our families safe from these drunk drivers. Interlock systems have been shown to reduce repeat offenses by 64 percent while the device is on the car.
More than 50 percent of drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license. Ignition interlocks should be required for all convicted DWI offenders, not discretionary as fewer than 10 percent of offenders who
are offered a choice between installing such a device or receiving a license suspension elect to enter an interlock program. Keeping our roads safe must not be optional.
Please join me in requesting your senators to back this bill by filling in the form on the MADD website .
Please visit their website for more ways to help get drunk drivers off of our roads until they get rehab themselves.
